I grew up watching the 7pm and 9pm weekdays scheduled drama serials aired on Channel 8. Back then, I would give anything in the world just to be home in front of my TV. What an addict I was. The finer younger years.
As I got older, I started to have other commitments on hand and my interest slowly wavered. I could go as far as not catch a single episode from a said serial.
For the past couple of months, I have been keeping tabs on the 9pm scheduled ones though. I have no idea what ignited my interest to get back into following them again. Though I may not have been a huge fanatic as before, there is still a tinge of the drama junkie in me.
Compared to serials in the previous years, the ones aired now have a stronger direction and focus. As of late, their attempt to strongly drive messages to the audience is commendable and definitely a right step forward. There is nothing I love more than taking back something after giving 20 hours of my time.
They are not perfect, of course. With the exception of the extremely popular Little Nonya《小娘惹》serial, almost every single one has had a 20 episodes cap and it gets irritating.
Irritating because the directors are forced to squeeze the entire script within that cap. As a result, there are often so many unfinished and abruptly ended segments which just irks me. More often than not, it is the latter that is occurring.
I could do with a little killing suspense if there is a second installment, but what if there isn’t? Those hanging questions over my head will never find its answers. What happened to 40 episode long serials? 30 would do just fine too just as long as there is a definite conclusion.
Despite my misgivings towards them, I do look forward to watching serials unfold, even if it was done in a mere 20 episode long life span.
