Why is MooTools using Google Groups?
MooTools is a JavaScript framework I like a lot, so much that I built MiniMoo on it. It has been quite a while since my last visit to the community forum. The last I saw of it, it was still being self hosted. However it is official. They have moved, to Google Groups. A very poor decision.
The forum gave MooTools an identity. They had a very neat, elegant and professional look, I enjoyed visiting it on a regular basis. The design was actually one of the very few I would complement.
What I had really liked was the many categories which we could post our threads in. It gave the different type of threads a place so that they could be easily found. It could be something for the beginners to MooTools or the more advanced users or perhaps even a script showcase. At the least, it was organized.
That was what separated them with jQuery and Script.aculo.us. jQuery uses a wiki. Script.aculo.us are on Google Groups. And now MooTools has followed suit.
The look of Google Groups is generic and there is no form of organization. All the topics are displayed as it is. As of now, 1,053 of them. What a drag it would be to actually browse them.
I am out of the MooTools community and am probably not the last.

Using Google Groups lessens the bandwidth greatly. Community takes up a lot of bandwidth and there’re always this bunch of impatient people refreshing and refreshing and that probably doesn’t help MooTools.
I like jQuery the most by the way.
For sure using Google Groups saves bandwidth, but then again we should expect all that in a community forum. Besides, I am sure many Mootools users would gladly donate to keep that forum up.
This os just temporary, there is a forum, plugin-forge in the works.
I keep hearing people say “there is a forum in the works”" but nothing official. No blog post, no newsletter, no IM, no google group posting. Just a lot of people saying “what’s happening” and a lot of random responses.
It is absolutely ridiculous, spam on the forums.
The closest I could get to updates is this, still there is nothing about a new forum in works.
I just started learning mootools and it is incredibly frustrating to find that google has indexed similar problems other users were having…on the forums. Nothing like a blank white page to help you solve a problem. The google group doesn’t ever seem to have the answer I am looking for.
Appalling isn’t it? What problems are you having? Maybe I could have an answer to it.
