What do you find most satisfying about programming?
Just a couple of months back, I talked about what I hated about programming. Dated weeks earlier, Justin James asked us programmers in the form of a poll, “What makes you feel good about what you do?“. What I considered most satisfying was feeling “in control” because the computer is following my code.
I believe I echo the thoughts of every programmer when I say that a sense of achievement is reached when we eventually tackle our objective. Be it finding a solution to why the code was not working as intended or pin pointing why an error is occurring, we always feel good about ourselves.
Programming in more ways than one involves accomplishing a difficult task and pushes you to the very limit of your capabilities. Many a times, I am tasked to use a language which I do not have much field experience in, and it is difficult initially. But it challenges you.
The thing about programming is that it make things pretty much simpler for others, and in most cases, they are grateful. I have personally been in one of those situations and it not only encourages me to keep wanting to do better but also makes me feel valued.
I have always liked being in charge and in control. I prefer taking on the role of a leader than to receive instructions and be led. Therefore it is no surprise that I want to be solely responsible for my code.
The computer is waiting on my instructions, and the results determine my ability as a programmer. I like that weight being put on my shoulders. Good or bad, I am responsible for it.
For me, the most satisfying thing is not being able to prove that I can accomplish a difficult task or receiving the gratitude of others. It is being in control.
