I am back from the blood bank at the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), after 2 hours. And yes, I donated my blood. It was my first time, I had always wanted to go for a blood donation but never threw myself into getting it done. It goes back many many months since I said I wanted to do it, and I am glad I finally contributed.

Initially I wanted to donate for the sake of this boy who was suffering from blood cancer after being notified via a forwarded SMS. But KK Hospital got back to me saying that the boy is already back home, nonetheless, I still headed down to HSA after work.

For some reason, the blood bank was heavily packed, the nurse told me the figure and I was stunned. 354 blood donations. Very good response indeed on that day.

It was quite a wait, but well worth the cause.

A relatively quick process, a needle slightly larger than the size of a felt pen’s tip opening up and a tube inserted into it. It didn’t hurt 1 bit, no I am not joking, it was painless, I did not feel any discomfort at all. So for all those who are afraid to donate blood because of the needles, your worries are squashed now.

All I had to do then after was to squeeze that rubber heart, which makes pumping blood out a much quicker process I presume. Within a span of 5 minutes, everything was done. The bag was full and I was ready to go. A complimentary drink at the cafe and iron tablets were my “souvenirs”.

At the end of the day, I felt more satisfaction than anything because 2 hours of my time was exchanged for a bag of blood which could help save a life.
