A fellow squad mate during our BMT (Basic Military Training) days knew me as one who is extremely obsessed with training. Almost every night, he would see me gearing up to run 3 rounds within our camp and then heading to the fitness corner to do some pull ups. As our POP (Pass Out Parade) neared its way, he asked:

“What would the Darran 20 years from now look like?”

And he dared wager that I would have a bulging tummy like almost every businessman you come across. And in my defense, I told him that exercising is not something which I am compelled to do, it is something I love doing, my passion. 20 years from now, I would still be the same Darran who would still treat exercising as a want-to-do and not a must-do.

My passion for exercise had sat in. I just felt so indifferent and helpless when I am not working out at the gym. Perhaps it has become part of my weekly routine and lifestyle that it is something I need to do, something along the lines of switching on my iMac everyday.

After 12 days of rest, you would have a sufficient reason to believe that the injury to my wrist which I had suffered while performing a bench press exercise would have fully recovered by now. To confirm whether my wrist was in an ‘ok’ state to hit the gym again, I did try to move my wrist in several different directions and it did not hurt one bit. I hesitated no further, a gym session was looming.

It turned out to be something which I regretted doing.

After the usual warm ups, I proceeded to doing some exercise at the lat pulldown machine. No problems there, and I moved on to working with the dumbbells.

I positioned myself to perform inclined chest flies, however the moment I attempted to carry the dumbbell, my wrist was feeling a bad pain that I could not continue. And apparently, the injury was aggravated. A sharp pain is experienced whenever I move my wrist now.

This is not the only injury this left wrist of mine has suffered. In 2006, during a football session, the ball hit my watch, and the sheer impact of the force caused the metal casing to smash onto my wrist. At that point of time, my wrist was rendered useless, I could not move it because of the unbearable pain. This injury took me a whole 2 months to recover and an extended period of time was needed before I could actually start carrying weights again. I am sure because of this accident, my wrist isn’t as strong as it used to be.

As reluctant I am to be on the sidelines, the only thing I can do right now is rest until my wrist is fully recovered. I will be evaluating the condition of my wrist on a weekly basis. No more gym sessions for the time being.
