We were invited for a street soccer game, the location was set in a condominium in Simei. It was there that we crossed paths with a bunch of disrespectful and arrogant group of young kids.

They asked,

“Can we join?”

I had thought well of them until they started to behave in a manner which I did not take too kindly to. They challenged my team’s goalkeeper; Thim Ler, arrogantly claiming that they would score 5 goals.

It could be laughed off as a joke, but this is certainly not a sporting gesture especially coming from people you are seeing for the very first time.

The first kicker whipped out a handphone for his friend to safe guard while he takes a crack at scoring. I was stunned and shocked with my jaw wide open; literally. I only got my first handphone when I was 16. I do not deny that I was envious.

Pre-schoolers putting 5 against a fully grown individual? The result need not be spelt out.

2 of us were kind enough to have a kick around with them, I sat out. When the ball went out of play, out of goodwill, Maran helped them retrieve it. Guess what was the response from one of the boys?

“Ball picker!”

There is this air of superiority about the boy. We are not his servants. Maran helped him as a favor, it is not a to-do-task on his list. Yet this is what he gets in return for his troubles, being disrespected.

I couldn’t be bothered to reason with him, shortly after, we left.

Are most well to do kids these days that spoilt?
