I dislike memorizing
I never liked taking tests/exams which require a tremendous effort of memory work. Since my secondary school days to date, I have never fared well in any of them. I have deliberately left out my primary school days. Back then, homework was the only reason why I opened up my textbooks at home.
My upcoming test on Computers, Networking & Communication is causing me quite a headache, despite it containing 30 MCQ questions. So far, I have not been set back by any modules. This is the only one which has really gotten me nervous. And as you would have guessed, it is very dry and requires a huge load of memory power. And as previous experiences have shown, I have never been good at memorizing.
Memorizing is all about getting the information into your head, I liken it to becoming a walking reference book. Though I do know of certain individuals who are able to replicate the information word for word, I feel that it is an exaggeration. You would be surprised that it is often those who are good memorizers of information that fail to produce results on a practical level.
For me, the most important thing is not to memorize what is said between the lines but to grasp the concept and apply it practically. After all, it hardly makes sense to memorize a truckload worth of information without knowing how to apply it in the real world.
This particular module is not accompanied by any practical sessions which allows us to completely understand the concept behind the huge amount of information.
I am a believer of what I see, not textual theoretical explanations.
I find myself gaining a lot more when I do a hands on session and actually come to terms with what is really going on. There is a reason why grades for my programming modules are always on the opposite end of theory ones.
With all that aside, I will spend the entire day tomorrow trying to digest what has been taught and throw it all out during the test. Wish me luck.
